Biography
Savvas Vergas was born in 1965 in Pafos. He is the son of the Army Officer George Vergas and teacher Anastasia Liasidou. He grew up in a small family that was very active in current events of Cyprus, especially the tragic events of 1974.
From the age of 16 he actively participated in the Youth of Democratic Party (DIKO) and as a member of its youth orchestra he took part in all its demonstrations both in Pafos and beyond. In 1983 he graduated from the First Lycaeum Archbishop Makarios III and then served in the National Guard from 1983-85. From 1985-1990, he studied at Democritus University of Thrace and received a diploma in Civil Engineering. During his student years he was very dynamic in solving student problems as vice-president of his graduating class.
Upon graduating in 1990 he arrived in Pafos to repatriate himself and establish his company S. Vergas Construction Ltd. In 2000 he also established Misha Holdings Ltd., a company dealing with land development.
As a member of DIKO he was elected in 1996 as Municipal Councillor of Pafos. In May 2001 he was candidate for MP. In December of the same year he was once again elected Municipal Councilor , then unanimously voted as Deputy Mayor of Pafos. From the 1st of June till the 31st of December 2006 he was Acting Mayor of Pafos and from the 1st of January 2007 is the Mayor, having elected in the elections of Dec. 2006.
Savvas is a member of the executive council of Radio Paphos and participated in the "Imia" program with very warm reception in 1998. In 1999 he was elected to the District Council of D.I.K.O. in Pafos, as well as to the Central Board, both of which he is a member to this day. He is also an active member of the Association of Civil Engineers and Architects, ETEK Constructors and EBE.
Savvas is married to Sophia Apostolidou, teacher of Greek Literature and they have three sons.
